Queen Mattress Set Buying Guide - Save By Choosing The Right Mattress Support

Buying queen mattress sets can be confusing, especially on a budget. Which queen size bed frame, cheap platform bed or foundation's best for your mattress type? And how much should you pay for your queen size mattress set?

What Exactly Are Queen Mattress Sets?

Headboards Queen Beds

That's a very good question. To a certain extent, queen mattress sets are whatever the store or retailer says they are. But usually they include everything to 'complete' the bed and provide support for a 60 inch by 80 inch standard queen size mattress. Most often a bed set includes the mattress and foundation, but not always. They sometimes add the bed frame, zippered mattress covers, pillows and even sheets!

The queen is the most popular bed for couples. But if one or both of you are tall, you'll be happier with one of the king mattress sets. These sets feature king size bed dimensions that are either 76 inches by 80 inches for the standard (or Eastern King), or 72 inches by 84 inches for California King size mattress sets.

Full mattress sets are smaller than queen size bed dimensions. They are made for double (full size) beds which are 54 inches by 75 inches for a standard or 54 inches by 80 inches for a Full XL mattress. This is a good size for a single sleeper.

Do Different Types of Queen Mattress Sets Need Different Foundations?

Yes. Queen mattresses can be heavy and need some sort of foundational support to prevent sagging that will cause back pain. An unsupported mattress is also unhealthy for your wallet because it causes excessive wear.

There are four main types of foundations:

Box Springs are often sold as a set with inner spring mattresses Box springs units have heavy gauge wire coils encased in a rigid frame that provide a little more softness and comfort so you sleep better. The springs provide just a bit of shock absorption. The downside is that springs wear out and eventually break. When this happens, your mattress is going to sag and cause you to wake with a backache. 'Ortho Boxes' or Traditional Wood Foundations - These foundations are used with all mattresses except water beds. Box foundations are made of soft or hard wood that will give your mattress a slightly firmer, more supportive feel. And they save you money because there are no moving parts to break down. Most have 7 or 8 support slats covered with 'fiberboard' or 'paperboard' and a decorative fabric cover. Because they prevent the mattress from bending and increase firmness, they are also called 'zero deflection units'. Grid Foundations - These mattress supports are used with all bed types, even some water beds. Grid foundations combine steel and wood to make a supportive grid for your mattress. They are often modular, making them easy to set up or move. Wood Platform Beds - Platforms are used with all mattress types. Wood platform foundations are solid surface units that serve as a combined bed frame and foundation. These can be used with any type of mattress. Water beds usually have specially designed platforms to bear the weight of the mattress.

Queen Size Bed Frames Because of their weight, most queen and larger size mattress sets should be supported by a bed frame with at least five or six legs or a platform. The obvious exceptions are air mattresses. If you have a headboard and footboard style bed, you'll want at least five wood slats underneath you with three placed in the center third of the bed.

How Much Do Queen Mattress Sets Cost?
Figure on spending at least 0 for the cheapest queen inner spring mattress and box spring combination or an inexpensive memory foam mattress. Like it or not, these are big beds and materials and shipping just aren't free.

But don't worry; prices for queen mattress sets are often negotiable. If you're buying at a local furniture store or mattress dealer, ask for a discount.

Some brands like Tempur-Pedic are so popular that getting a significant discount on the mattress or foundation is very unlikely. In that case, see if you can get the salesman to sweeten the deal with pillows, mattress covers, bed frames, quilts or even upgrades to fine sheets. And don't be afraid to walk away to try your luck elsewhere. You can always go back another day.

Now that you know all about queen size mattress sets, you're ready to go shopping!
